Montana Fishing License Changes: What Anglers Need to Know About FWP’s New Licensing System

Beginning March 1, anglers and hunters across Montana saw a significant change to how licenses are purchased. The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) has officially eliminated the use of third-party license providers across the state. This means local retailers, sporting goods stores, and fly shops are no longer able to sell or print fishing and hunting licenses.

For many years, purchasing a Montana fishing license at a local fly shop was a convenient way for anglers to get on the water quickly while also getting local advice on where and how to fish. Under the new system, all licenses must now be purchased directly through FWP.

Anglers now have two options when purchasing a Montana fishing license.

The first option is to purchase licenses online through the official FWP website at fwp.mt.gov. After purchasing online, anglers can print their license at home or keep a digital copy on their mobile device.

The second option is to purchase licenses in person at a Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks office.

While the change may take some getting used to, the goal from FWP’s perspective is to streamline licensing and centralize the process through their own system.

For visiting anglers planning a Montana fly fishing trip, this means a little more preparation before arriving. Instead of stopping into a fly shop to grab a license before heading to the river, anglers will want to purchase their license online ahead of time or stop at an FWP office if needed.

The good news is that the online purchasing system is relatively quick and easy once you have an account set up. Many anglers will likely find that buying their Montana fishing license online before traveling makes the process smoother.

Even though fly shops can no longer issue licenses, they remain one of the best places to stop before fishing. Local shops provide up-to-date fishing reports, fly recommendations, river conditions, and advice that can make the difference between a tough day and a memorable one.

Whether you’re planning to fish the Big Hole River, Beaverhead River, Madison River, Jefferson River, or the Upper Missouri, stopping into a local fly shop for flies and current fishing information is always a good idea.

As we head into the 2026 fishing season, this new licensing process is something anglers across Montana will need to adjust to. Purchasing licenses online ahead of time will likely become the new routine for many fishermen and women.

If you have questions about the new licensing process or need help preparing for your next Southwest Montana fly fishing trip, stop by the shop or check in with us anytime. We’re always happy to help anglers get pointed in the right direction before they hit the water.
